About us

Science box is a project aimed at sparking an interest in science in kids at a young age. Founded by Shalini Guleria in 2018, it is ever expanding and looking for volunteers. Science Box currently focuses it's work in the Waikato region of New Zealand, and hopes to grow this reach to a global level one day.

AIM

A child’s mind is imaginative, filled with crazy ideas about the world around them. They want to explore, they want to create and they want to innovate.

The ‘Science Box’ social enterprise is aimed at bringing the world of science to primary school (aged 5-10 years old) kids and sparking their curiosity about the world around them. This project encourages young kids to be explorers and discover the mysteries of science in their day to day lives.

At Science Box we believe that science is for everyone and we want to eliminate the stigma in our youth that science is a difficult subject and can only be done by smart people.

GOAL

Here at Science Box we believe that to learn science we don’t require fancy equipment. All we need is our imagination and curiosity.

We want our young kids to get their hands dirty and solve science challenges while learning fundamental scientific theories. Not only do we want to teach kids science, but also develop their interpersonal skills to prepare them for the future.

We believe that if the magic of science is shown to our kids at a young age, New Zealand will have a bright future with leading scientists and engineers.

Our plan

WORKSHOP PLAN

The workshop is aimed to be one and a half hours long but could be extended to two hours if need be. The aim of the workshop is to engage students in a range of science experiments that can be done at home with no fancy equipment. These workshops will allow students to be curious about the things that they use in their day to day lives and learn the science behind them.

WORKSHOP DAY

The workshop is conducted by the facilitator and he/she will be providing the students with the material to conduct their science challenges. The class will be divided into groups of 4 to 5 students in each group and will be given a science challenge to complete. The groups will get 45 minutes to figure out the science challenge and come up with an idea of how the experiment works. Throughout the science challenges the students can get help from their teachers and the facilitator. The teachers will be provided with experimental details prior to the workshop.

AFTER THE CHALLENGE

Once all the groups have figured out their science challenge they will then get 20 minutes to make a small poster to explain what they did and what the science theory was behind their science challenge. The students will then present their posters to rest of the class explaining what they did and maybe show their experiment as well.

AFTER PRESENTATION

Once everyone has presented their posters the science box facilitator will show an experiment to the students as a group to end the workshop.
